RIM Blackberry to Support AIM, ICQ and Yahoo IM

RIM announced at CTIA Wireless that it is in the works to builing support for AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ and Yahoo Instant Messenger for its Blackberry line of mobile email devices.
RIM Blackberry devices will come preloaded with Yahoo Instant Messenger first in the next few months with AIM and ICQ to follow.
Motorola Introduces CDMA Models

Motorola introduced last week 3 new CDMA models, including a version of their ultra-popular Razr model currently for GSM. In addition to the CDMA Razr, Motorola also introduced the 3-megapixel MS550 slider, the V323, featuring a large color display, and the V266p with push-to-talk.

Sprint Music Video Ringtones

Wonderful. Now, in the middle of “Revenge of the Sith” some dude’s phone is going to break out in Crime Mob’s latest music video. Sprint has announced that instead of simple audio ringtones that play Beethoven’s Fifth or Pachebel Canon in E-Minor, customers can now download music video ringtones to their phones.

Motorola iTunes Phone Fails to Debut at CeBIT

The much awaited Motorola iTunes phone did not make its anticipated debut at CeBIT this past week. It turns out that there was a difference in marketing strategy between Motorola and Apple. Whereas Motorola (and other phone companies) believe in releasing new cell phone models for display prior to actually selling, Apple’s Steve Jobs is of the mindset that announcements of new models should be followed immediately by actual sales.

RIM Settles with NTP for $450 Million

RIM and NTP announced on March 16, 2005 that they had settled with NTP on the issue of patent infringement. Under the terms of the settlement, RIM will pay to NTP $450 million for the right to perpetually use technology without further payment of royalties. NTP is a closely-held patent-holding company based in the United States while RIM is based out of Ontario, Canada.

Cell Phone Porn Estimated to Rise to $5 Billion by 2010

According to Strategy Analytics, mobile phone users spent $400 million on porno pics and videos for their cell phones in 2004 and, by 2010, that amount will rise to $5 billion. Despite the small cell phone screen sizes and limited bandwidth allocation given to each user, some companies such as Playboy and Private Media Group are gearing up their offerings.

Sony Ericsson AU W31S for Japan’s KDDI

For the Japan market, Sony Ericsson will be releasing the AU W31S music phone. The AU W31S is a music phone supporting multiple formats including ATRAC3, MP3 and WMA. Available in orange and white, the cell phone will be available starting April 10, 2005 on Japan’s KDDI carrier only.
